About the Process

The Paintings

These paintings represent an entirely new body of work by Peter Macdonald, created entirely by hand without machine assistance—paintings in the purest sense. Born from years of experimentation with the relationship between technology and creativity, each work begins with the artist giving himself a 'prompt,' subverting AI by exploring what it feels like to 'act like a machine' while remaining fundamentally human.

Informed by Macdonald's deep engagement with digital imagery, programming, and generative processes, these works raise timely questions about agency, authorship, and what constitutes art in our current cultural moment.

The images you see online are digital representations of the physical paintings in the gallery. They're available for you to collaborate with to create a new artwork that integrates text and image, and to own as an original high quality inkjet print.

How It Works

1. Choose an Artwork

Browse the gallery of works from the exhibition and select one that speaks to you.

2. Select a Voice

Choose from different voices, inspired by influences on the artist—each offers a distinct lens on the artwork.

3. Generate the Text

AI uses image analysis to look at the image, then drafts a unique text in your chosen voice; together with the image, this forms a new artwork.

4. See It in the Gallery

The completed collaborative artwork will appear on the video screen in the gallery.

5. Order Your Print

Optionally, order a high quality archival inkjet print presenting the image and the generated text as a single piece.
